Category:
The Xiphos! The blade of the Greek heroes! This Greek Xiphos features a blade forged from C60 high carbon steel which is stiffened by a strong central ridge which tapers sharply into a wide and thin cutting plan – an ideal form for strong slicing ability. The strong central ridge is likely a design holdover from earlier bronze bladed weapons which needed a strong center to stiffen the softer bronze and early iron age swords continued this feature for some time. The grip of the Xiphos is a composite of bone and steel layers, securely riveted to the robust blade tang. The scabbard is made of carved wood and is covered in leather and completed with brass fittings and a bone tip chape framed by stylized brass plates. Modeled after Xiphoi swords from the Campovalano necropolis—a former Greek colony on Italy’s Adriatic coast near the Alfadena necropolis—this design reflects the many similar swords unearthed there. Buried with their warrior-owners, these swords suggest the colony’s capacity to produce or acquire numerous high-quality weapons, likely through specialized workshops rather than individual craftsmen. These warrior burials have been a wealth of knowledge to archeologists and historians and reflect well on the sophistication of the culture and martial spirit of the Italic Greek colonies.
